Geography Higher Level là môn liên ngành độc đáo trong IB Diploma — kết hợp physical geography (địa hình, khí hậu, hydrology), human geography (dân số, đô thị hoá, di cư), và global geography (biến đổi khí hậu, food/water security, geopolitics). Đây là môn được Cambridge, LSE, UCL đặc biệt đánh giá cao cho Urban Planning, Environmental Science, International Relations.
Cấu trúc môn này phức tạp: (1) Geographic Themes — chọn 3 trong 7 (popular: Freshwater, Urban Environments, Hazards). (2) Geographic Perspectives — Global Change (cho cả SL và HL). (3) HL Extension — Global Interactions (4 theme về globalisation, diversity, sustainability).
Đặc biệt: Internal Assessment là Fieldwork Investigation 2,500 từ — HV phải đi thực địa thu thập primary data (khảo sát người dân, đo đạc địa lý) sau đó viết report. Đây là phần "thực chiến" nhất trong toàn bộ IB.

Geography HL có khó hơn History HL không?

Khác nhau về kiểu khó. Geography HL khó hơn về breadth — cần biết 60+ case studies từ khắp thế giới (deserts in Africa, floods in Bangladesh, megacities in China). History HL khó hơn về depth — cần biết chi tiết 200+ ngày tháng và 100+ historians. Học sinh giỏi memorization có hệ thống nên chọn Geography; giỏi essay analysis nên chọn History.
Fieldwork IA làm ở Việt Nam được không?

Có — và rất khuyến khích. IBO không yêu cầu fieldwork ở nước ngoài. Học sinh VN có nhiều topic tốt: micro-climate trong khu đô thị (HCM/HN), river processes (sông Sài Gòn, sông Hồng), gentrification (khu phố cổ HN, Quận 1 HCM), urban heat island, traffic patterns. Quan trọng là chọn topic có primary data đo được trong 1-2 buổi fieldwork.
Nên chọn 3 themes nào?

Combo phổ biến tại VN: Freshwater + Urban Environments + Hazards (3 themes có nhiều case study local). Combo cho Pre-Med/Sustainability: Food & Health + Urban Environments + Geophysical Hazards. Combo cho IR/Politics: Power + Urban Environments + Geophysical Hazards. Quyết định cuối cùng nên theo trường — vì giáo viên thường chuyên 3 themes nhất định.
Geography HL hay ESS — chọn cái nào?

Geography HL nếu bạn theo Urban Planning, IR, Politics, Liberal Arts — broader scope. ESS (Environmental Systems & Societies) nếu theo Environmental Sci, Sustainability, Climate Sci — focused on environment. ESS có thể count cả Group 3 và Group 4 (interdisciplinary), Geography chỉ Group 3.
HL Extension Global Interactions có khó không?

Khó nhất chương trình — yêu cầu synthesis từ nhiều topic và chính trị quốc tế hiện tại. Paper 3 chỉ 75 phút cho 2 essays nên cần planning kỹ. Tin vui: chỉ chiếm 20% tổng điểm, nên không quá ảnh hưởng nếu các phần khác mạnh. Chiến lược: focus vào 2 themes thay vì spread out 4 themes.
