Môn philosophy bắt buộc của IB Diploma — không phải để "học triết" mà để rèn critical thinking. TOK đặt câu hỏi: "How do we know what we know?" qua 5 areas of knowledge.

TOK là một trong những subjects unique nhất trong giáo dục thế giới. Không học content như Math hay Biology, TOK học cách suy nghĩ về kiến thức. Câu hỏi cốt lõi: làm sao chúng ta biết được điều mình biết là đúng?
Sinh viên TOK không học để biết thêm facts — mà để hiểu nature và limitations của kiến thức. Tại sao Mathematics đáng tin cậy hơn Religious Knowledge Systems? Khi nào Natural Sciences sai? Vai trò của ngôn ngữ trong shape suy nghĩ chúng ta?
Đây là môn được Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale đánh giá rất cao — vì TOK essay chính là "writing sample" tốt nhất để admissions officers đánh giá khả năng tư duy phân tích của ứng viên. HV Oxbridge thường có TOK A grade (17% global, 48% HV của bên mình).
TOK kết hợp với Extended Essay tạo ra 0-3 bonus points trong tổng 45 điểm IB. 3 điểm này nghe nhỏ — nhưng quyết định pass/fail nhiều top universities. Cambridge yêu cầu IB 40-42 + bonus 1-3. Chỉ TOK A + EE A mới đạt full +3.
5 AOKs khám phá
History
Làm sao biết quá khứ "thật sự" xảy ra như thế nào? Vai trò của perspective historians, primary sources, bias. Case studies: Vietnam War interpretation US vs VN, Cold War narratives.
Human Sciences
Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology. Khác Natural Sci vì study con người (subjects can lie/change behavior). Kahneman behavioral economics, Milgram experiment ethics.
Natural Sciences
Physics, Chemistry, Biology. "Most reliable" knowledge system theo nhiều người. Scientific method, peer review, falsifiability (Popper). Examples: Einstein vs Newton, vaccine development.
Mathematics
"Most certain" knowledge — proof-based. Discovered or invented? Platonism vs constructivism. Gödel's incompleteness, non-Euclidean geometry, infinity paradoxes.
The Arts
Music, Painting, Literature, Film. Knowledge through emotion + experience. Subjective vs universal aesthetic standards. Examples: Truyện Kiều, Picasso's Guernica, Kubrick's 2001.
Themes (IK, IT, KP, KR, KL, KS)
Knowledge & Indigenous Societies, & Technology, & Politics, & Religion, & Language. Học sinh chọn 2 themes để đào sâu trong DP1. Themes giúp ground TOK vào real-world context cụ thể.

TOK Essay
1,600 từ
Học sinh chọn 1 trong 6 prescribed titles do IBO release tháng 9 mỗi năm. Essay phân tích title qua 2 AOKs khác nhau với real-life examples. Thường 4 drafts: skeleton outline → first draft → mid-feedback → final.
TOK Exhibition
950 từ + 3 objects
Học sinh chọn 1 trong 35 IA prompts → tìm 3 objects (real, từ life của HV) → viết commentary 950 từ giải thích cách 3 objects này manifest the prompt. Format: presentation oral + written.

- Chọn 2 AOKs cực contrasting (vd Math + Arts) — show breadth thinking
- Mỗi argument có real-life example cụ thể (history event, scientific discovery)
- Acknowledge counter-arguments rồi refute — không né tránh
- Sử dụng knowledge questions (làm sao chúng ta biết X?) chứ không phải claims
- Thesis statement rõ ràng ở intro + restate ở conclusion với nuance
5 things thường gây fail
- Description kiến thức thay vì analysis — tránh "Math is..." → dùng "How does Math know..."
- Chỉ chọn 1 AOK hoặc 2 AOKs quá similar (Physics + Chem) — thiếu contrast
- Generic examples (smartphone, internet) — admissions/examiners thấy nhàm
- Quá nhiều quotes triết gia không necessary — show your own analysis
- Bias rõ ràng cho 1 AOK ("Sciences Arts") — TOK examiners ghét personal preference
